Why Change Succeeds and Why Change Fails

The challenge is that many organizations and individuals have been convinced that a desired change is something to be obtained by “just doing this” or “just doing that.”

Unfortunately, our actual experiences have proven that even with the best of intentions, commitment and the use of promoted change methodologies; change in fact, cannot be guaranteed. This leads many of us to ask the following two questions:

  1. Why does change fail even though there are a solid set of intentions, commitments and use proven methodologies?
  2. What can my organization or I, as an individual, do to improve the chances of obtaining a successful desired change?

Answering these two questions is at the heart of the Change Science Institute’s mission. The reality is that the underlying workings of change can be condensed down into a basic set of definitions, principles, and concepts.

More importantly, these basics go way beyond specific change methodologies or change management techniques. These basics of change tell you why change works the way it works. This knowledge in turn, becomes a tool for you to evaluate the likelihood of obtaining success from the use of any specifically promoted change methodology and/or change management technique that is under consideration.

The key is that if an organization or individual learns these basics of change along with some associated tools, they can in fact develop a clearer understanding of:

  • Why a particular change took place
  • The risks associated with obtaining the specific desired change they are looking for
  • How they can improve their chances to obtain a successful desired change
  • What the likelihood is that a particular promoted change methodology and/or change management technique will work for them

The Change Science Institute has developed several approaches to help you or your organization learn and develop an understanding of the underling basics of change.
